When the roof fails, the first job is stopping the water

Roofing emergencies do not pick a convenient time. A limb comes through in a thunderstorm, wind peels back a section of shingles, or a leak you did not know about shows up as a bulge in the ceiling. Lake Murray Construction handles urgent roof problems across Columbia, Lexington, Irmo, Chapin and the rest of the Midlands. Call (803) 708-6628, and our first priority is temporary protection to keep water out of the building. The full repair follows once the roof is dry and the damage is documented.

We are a family owned roofing company with more than 20 years of experience, and we have seen what Midlands storms do. Here is how we respond.

How we respond to a roofing emergency

Immediate Assessment

When you call, we dispatch our experienced roofing professionals to your property for a prompt evaluation of the damage.

Temporary Protection

Our first priority is to stop further damage by applying temporary protective measures such as tarps or emergency coverings to prevent water from getting in and to protect the interior of your home or building.

Detailed Inspection

We conduct a thorough inspection to determine the extent of the damage and the steps needed for repair, with photos and a written description for your insurance claim.

Repairs and Restoration

Our team works quickly to repair the damage, from replacing shingles and sealing leaks to more involved repairs, with as little downtime as possible.

What to do right now

Stay off the roof

A wet roof in wind is dangerous, and nothing up there is worth a fall. Leave the roof to us.

Contain the water

Put a bucket under the drip and move furniture, rugs and electronics out of the way.

Relieve a bulging ceiling

If the ceiling is sagging with water, poke a small hole with a screwdriver and let it drain into a bucket before it spreads or comes down.

Photograph everything

The roof from the ground, the ceiling, the attic, the yard. Your insurance company will want these.

Tell us what happened and what you can see. We will tell you what to expect.

Keep receipts

Temporary repairs that stop further damage are generally expected by insurers, so keep the receipt for anything you buy.

Roofing emergencies we handle

Storm and Wind Damage

Shingles stripped by wind, sections lifted at the edge, flashing torn loose. We cover the exposed area and repair it once the weather clears.

Fallen Trees and Limbs

A limb through the roof needs the hole covered the same visit and the structure checked before any repair. We do both.

Active Leaks

Water coming through the ceiling during rain. We find the source, stop it with temporary protection, and schedule the permanent repair.

Exposed Decking and Holes

Any opening in the roof is covered first. Then we assess the decking and the framing under it.

Insurance Documentation

Photos and a written description of the damage, which is what your insurer will ask for.

Temporary Protection

Tarps and emergency coverings to keep water out until the permanent repair.

Storm damage and your insurance claim

Two things worth knowing before you call your insurer, and both come from the South Carolina Department of Insurance guidance on what to do after a disaster. Temporary repairs that stop further damage are expected, so keep every bill and receipt. And do not be rushed into signing a repair contract beyond that temporary work until your adjuster has agreed on the scope. Be careful with anyone who shows up uninvited after a storm and wants a signature on the spot. Our customers have told us in their reviews that we made the insurance side of a roof job easier, and that is the goal every time.

The storms that cause most Columbia roof emergencies

Most of the emergency calls in the Midlands come from wind and water, not hail. We get about 45 inches of rain a year, and the wettest stretch runs June through August, when afternoon thunderstorms bring sudden downbursts that strip shingles and drop limbs. The remains of tropical systems add days of wind and rain in late summer and fall. Homes on open lots or near the water around Lake Murray feel it most. Hail does reach the Midlands from time to time, but wind and water do most of the damage to Columbia roofs. A roof inspection once a year and after any big storm catches the loose shingles and lifted flashing before the next one turns them into an emergency.

Emergency roofing questions Columbia homeowners ask

What counts as a roofing emergency?
Water coming into the building, a hole or opening in the roof, a tree or limb on the roof, a section of shingles stripped off, or sagging. If water is getting in or can get in with the next rain, treat it as an emergency and call. We handle these on homes and on commercial buildings.
What should I do if my roof is leaking during a storm?
Stay off the roof. Contain the water inside, relieve a bulging ceiling into a bucket, move belongings out of the way, photograph the damage, and call us. Permanent repairs wait for dry weather, but temporary protection does not.
Can you repair a roof in the rain?
Temporary protection, yes. We can cover an opening or a damaged area to stop the water. Permanent repairs need a dry roof, so the full repair is scheduled as soon as the weather allows.
What are your hours for emergencies?
Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, at (803) 708-6628. If a storm hits outside those hours, protect the inside of the building as described above, photograph the damage, and call as soon as the office opens.
Will my insurance cover emergency roof repair?
Sudden damage from wind, hail or a fallen limb is commonly covered, including the temporary repairs that stop further damage. Wear from age and lack of maintenance usually is not. Your insurer makes that call, and our photos and written description give you what you need to make the claim.
What happens after the tarp goes on?
We inspect the full roof, document the damage, and give you a written estimate for the permanent repair, or a replacement if the damage is too widespread to repair. You decide, and if there is a claim, the work waits for the adjuster's scope.
Do you offer complimentary roof inspections and estimates?
Yes. Call us or send the form on this page to schedule your complimentary inspection and estimate.
